Hoosick is a quaint little town nestled in the county of Rensselaer, NY, about 11-miles from the border of its neighbor to the east, Vermont. US President Chester Arthur once called Hoosick home and the famous American painter Grandma Moses was discovered and is buried in Hoosick. Pretty impressive for a town with a modern day population of about 6,000 citizens. However, what few know is that Hoosick also happens to be the actual location of the Battle of Bennington. It was the heroic deeds of those who, at this battle, under brilliant leadership of General John Stark, eventually lead to the uttering of the words that would become the NH state motto – “Live Free or Die.” As endearing as our dictum has become, even beyond the borders of the Granite State, there is more to these four words, just as there is more to the man that made them famous.
