1st NH Congressional District Debate – Rochester, NH

Once again I would like to thank the Rochester (NH) 9-12 Group for inviting me to serve as one of the co-moderators for the 1st Congressional District (NH) Debate.  I would also like to thank the audience for their attentiveness and enthusiasm…nice job.

Jerry Delemus, the 9-12 Coordinator (and the other debate moderator) shared the audience survey results from the debate with me:

1. Which Candidate did you think performed the best:

Ashooh 28; Bearse 2;  Bestani 11; Guinta 34; Mahoney 20

2. Which Candidate do you think needs improvement:

Ashooh 2; Bearse 55; Bestani 7; Guinta 13; Mahoney 11

3. Which Candidate surprised you the most:

Ashooh 39; Bearse 9; Bestani 9; Guinta 2; Mahoney 22

4.       If the election were held today, who would you vote for:

Ashooh 24; Bearse 2; Bestani 9; Guinta 40; Mahoney 19

Each candidate brought their own unique style and experience to the debate, something the audience was very keen at picking up on.  As a moderator I make every effort to remain neutral, and will not share my debate survey publicly.  However, I did want to share some general observations.

As I look at the numbers it is clear that audience felt that candidate Rich Ashooh had the overall most consistent performance ( based on the results of all four questions), and that the audience was not enthusiastic with  candidate Peter Bearse performance .

If you subtract the results of question 2 (Which Candidate do you think needs improvement?) from question 1 (Which Candidate did you think performed the best?), candidate Rich Ashooh had a higher “positive” rating with the audience (by a factor of 5).

Candidate Guinta emerged as the victor of this debate (from the audience surveys) based on the responses to question 1 (Which Candidate did you think performed the best?) and question 4 (If the election were held today, who would you vote for?), with candidate Ashooh placing second, candidate Mahoney coming in at third, candidate Bestani placing fourth, and candidate Bearse coming in last (according to the audience survey).

The survey is of course unscientific, but represents the “voice of the people.” Each candidate will take the surveys and use the data as they see fit.  But I would encourage them view the massive amount of video and audio available from this event, and heed the words of William Shakespeare – “…….to thine own self be true….”

I hope to see everyone for the next debate that I will moderate on June 19, and will feature the NH gubernatorial candidates.
